What is a lithophane and how does it work? A photo turned into a 3D print

How do you give traditional photos a completely new, one-of-a-kind look? By transforming them into three-dimensional objects. This is where lithophanes shine. A lithophane is simply a photograph embossed and generated by a 3D printer. The best effect appears when it’s backlit: light passes through the thin parts of the image and is blocked by its thicker areas — and the amount of detail that emerges is simply stunning. The tools that convert photos into a lithophane model detect the main subject of the image, emboss it, add a suitable border and generate a ready 3D file (STL).

What is a lithophane?

Traditionally, it’s a thin porcelain plaque carved in the form of a relief. It looks most impressive in transmitted light, which is why it has usually been used as a decorative screen for light sources. Interestingly, lithophanes have an almost two-hundred-year history — candle-lit porcelain pictures were a parlour fashion of 19th-century Europe, long before anyone dreamed of printers.

3D printing achieves the same remarkable effect without a ceramic or wooden plaque. All it takes is the right filament. Light, fully opaque materials work best — cooler or warmer shades of white. Dark filaments don’t let enough light through, which stops the lithophane from working properly.

How a lithophane works

Photos printed in 3D have a variable light-attenuation coefficient, which translates into different thicknesses in different areas. The brighter parts of the image are visibly thinner than the darker ones. Add a backlight, and a monochrome photograph appears before your eyes. You can even achieve a colour effect: just attach a two-dimensional colour print of the photo, at the right size, to the back.

It’s one of the most “magical” 3D printing techniques — which is why kids love it. On our 3D printing path the lithophane often becomes a gift project: a student turns a family photo into a night lamp for grandma and, for the first time, sees that their skills can genuinely move adults. In the PMR methodology this is an important moment of reflection: technology stops being a toy and becomes a way of making things that matter.

Lithophane print settings — what to keep in mind

Pay attention to parameters such as:

  • vertical, perpendicular orientation of the model on the bed,
  • positioning the lithophane along the printer’s axis of motion,
  • line width matched to the chosen nozzle,
  • 100% infill,
  • bed adhesion — cylindrical and curved lithophanes should sit flush against the bed.

Settings for thin-walled objects matter just as much: the printer must not leave holes in the print. Also watch the supports and the position of the seam.

Good news for beginners: free online tools (lithophane generators) will do most of the work — upload a photo and download the STL.
